How to Commute in Style

Hi Boos! My name is Jill and I am the newest of Fashology’s super fab interns. I commute to Fisher College in Boston and am working towards obtaining my bachelors in Fashion Merchandising. I also work at a boutique in Boston, so hustle & bustle is pretty much my middle name by now. Now I know some people think I’m crazy for committing to a two hour commute, but I promise it’s rewarding at the end of the day. There is one challenge that I face daily though, what am I going to wear!?

After two years of commuting I’ve gathered some extensive knowledge on how to stay warm, what shoes to wear, and when to just stay home. Although, the staying home part typically only happens when I get subway delay alerts sent to my phone before my alarm even goes off.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far…

SPLURGE ON THOSE BOOTS! I cannot stress this enough. Having the right shoes is the most important part of the whole commuting process. I’ve had these Dr. Martens for well over six years and they still look brand new! I wear Dr. Martens boots religiously as I have yet to find a boot comfier yet still so cool and versatile. When I am feeling adventurous I choose a heeled boot option but with a chunky block heel to maintain comfort.

LAYER! LAYER! LAYER! For a cold day in Boston I like to layer a long sleeve under sweaters and dresses. Especially when wearing clothing that isn’t tight to your body, having a tight layer underneath really does the trick. Also, when wearing a dress or skirt I like to layer tights and knee-high socks to keep me warm. I got my dress from Zara and it is a great option for commuting since it is oversized and thick. Layering with a good coat and other winter accessories are vital to complete the look. I got my coat from the clearance section of Forever 21 for a whopping seven dollars! As it gets warmer you can remove or add the layers back on throughout the day.

If you follow these basic rules I promise your commute will be that much easier! They say that if you look good then you feel good, but in my opinion if you feel good then you look good.

Be confident, be cool, but most importantly be comfortable!

Until next time.

XO,

Jill
